Re-appropriation, my ass! He has done it. Joel Gibb, singer-songwriter and the only permanent band member, has managed to kiss folk music awake from its fussiness. With up-tempo violins and racing handclaps, the man who likes to wear a golden suit has beautifully queered up the hetero-authenticity normally offered by folk. With hymns like “Ban Marriage” and “I Believe in the Good of Life”, his band has joyfully turned the indie world upside down. On their new album, they celebrate Gibb leaving Berlin and returning to Toronto with friends like Feist and the Pet Shop Boys. Awawaaa!

“A little bit country, a little bit ‘gay church folk music’.” Noisey
