Dorothée Munyaneza .Kigali . Ruanda I Marseille . France

A choreography of survival

Metal against metal, two knives are being sharpened against each other, producing a sound that seems both mundane and otherworldly at the same time. In the dim light of the stage, Dorothée Munyaneza steps forward and sings in Kinyarwanda, a Rwandan Bantu language. She was twelve when Rwanda was bathed in the blood of the Tutsi minority in the genocide of 1994 and she had to flee to Europe. 800,000 dead in 100 days, that’s what Alain Mahé reads to us, who doesn’t just make knives sing on the stage, but also produces music with machetes and pots, to which dancer Nestor Kouamé dances and Munyaneza sings and speaks. Together the three of the attempt to make it possible to experience the individual and collective trauma through art, without ever denying its inconceivability. In the process, they descend deep down into the pain, undeviating in their search for the answer to the question: “And you? Where were you in April 1994?”
