Gringo Cardia, one of the most sought after Brazilian set-designers and video artists, has brought to life an altruistic, exciting and important project in an old factory building in Rio de Janeiro: Young artists from the favelas are given the unique opportunity to develop their creative talents and work co-operatively at Spectaculu!. In a one-week seminar, Thomas Schirren, Professor of Classics at the University of Salzburg, examined the imagery of an ancient epoch with the young people. Parallel to the creation of a new identity in ancient Athens under the threat of an overpowering enemy and its exploration in Aeschylus The Persians, the question if and how ones own way of life can become the basis and driver of social change was at the centre of this discussion. As the way of life of the young artists is reflected in their artistic work, the images and art works express the artistic I as the seed of a new identity.

The artists at Spectaculu!:
Alana Carvalho de Oliveira, Andr dos Santos Assis, Angelo Mello da Silva, Dayane Ferraz Rezende, Fernanda Nascimento de Melo, Jefferson Modesto, Leonardo de Freitas Pinto, Marcelo Felipe dos Santos, Marciano Lima Rodrigues, Michelle G. de Freitas, Priscila Cardoso, Thiago Matos de Sul, Tiago do Nascimento Ortega, Victor Valentim da Silva Reis, Wibelson Salustino da Silva
