The new pop music of Barbara Morgenstern boasts hook-and-eyes and mantraps and is as unpredictable as ever. The arrangements, dominated by the piano, are reminiscent of the ballads and chansons of Brecht and Weill. Morgenstern sings mostly in German, occasionally in English and even in Polish. The melodious and gentle singing forms the core of the event, but right and left, above and below something else is happening. It seems as though the music, with its often unusual metric, is providing the subtext for the contemplative lyrics. Against such a background, the expansive pop moments, where your heart just opens, have an even bigger impact.
