Documentary play about a Sudanese in Syria
This is the story of Yaser Abdellatif, performed by himself. Following the civil war in 1991, Abdellatif was forced to cut short his studies at the Drama Institute in Khartoum. He transferred to the Academy of Drama in Damascus and stayed in Syria. This play reveals Yaser's life in unusual contexts: it is the story of a political refugee who slips from one dictatorship to the next. It is the story of family life via Skype: his wife and child have fled in the United States, the others remained in the Sudan. It is the story of a man of the theatre, a black actor who is an outsider, who enjoys conducting debates, writes strange poems and has a gift for telling stories. A story with numerous defeats, some triumphs. A story that includes everything that can be told on a theatre stage: identity, culture and tradition, love, friendship and tragic conflicts.
The Syrian director Omar Abusaada participated in Festival Theaterformen 2012 in Braunschweig. Despite the escalation of the revolutionary conflict in Syria he has continued his theatrical work there. In his new production he focuses on an unusual contemporary witness of current events.
