Pornography does not portray sex or the porn business. It portrays what could be described as the pornography of everyday life. It is the story of a Western metropolis in seven episodes. The city is London, the day the characters live through is 7th July 2005, when four suicide bombers attacked the London Tube and 52 people lost their lives.
Simon Stephens is one of the most successful British dramatists. Pornography was commissioned by the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg for the director Sebastian Nbling. Stephens shows fragments of everyday life, touching moments in the lives of urban dwellers coming close to a catastrophe which is never described. Images of hell. They are silent. are recurring sentences in Pornography. And so we follow eight people through the citys traffic system on that exceptionally ordinary day: a school boy, a young mother, a brother and his sister, a professor and his student, one of the suicide bombers and an old woman.
There will be an audience talk after the performance on 16 June. Admission free.
