Roger Bernat | Spain

Interactive audio play with undreamed-of consequences
It all starts like a game. The audience are given headphones and hear questions: Why are you here? Do you like your first name? Were you ever a member of a pop band? Is the place you live your native country? Some of the questions posed are superficial, some totally absurd and some personal. Instead of replying with words, the answers are given in movements - according to instructions. In turn, the spectators themselves become the actors. With their visible answers they divide themselves into continuously new factions, in "us" and "the others". The safety of being able to decide what one reveals about oneself leaves room for curiosity. One finds out more and more about oneself and one's fellow players without ever exchanging a single word. The movements of the spectators on the Burgplatz continuously delineate new patterns that usually remain invisible in the public spaces of the city.
Catalan director Roger Bernat's subtly planned orchestration of the fellow players illustrates how fine the line between individual decisions and unconscious persuasion is.
