Mexican history at the kitchen table
Mexico's recent history is re-enacted between artificial lawns, glass pearl curtains and a lot of toys: During the 1970s and 1980s, guerilla groups mushroomed across the country. They fought for indigenous land rights and equality, against the long-lasting rule of the "Institutional Revolutionary Party" (PRI). Nowadays the political commitment of this generation and its bloody consequences has been largely forgotten. The young team of artists who make up Lagartijas tiradas al sol (Lizards basking in the sun) perform the historical events with passion and the greatest of ease. With model railways, toy cars and even Playmobil figures they imitate the "dirty war" between the government and the armed resistance groups, and blend figures, masks, videos, documentary and biographical material into a performative collage. However, despite the confidence with which they blend the forms, the emotional burden of history is always there. The recurrent theme within the ideological turf battles, massacres and waves of arrests is the biography of the former guerillera Margarita Urías Hermosillo. Her story combines personal and political, past and future.
