The Schillstraße Memorial, a bright building with a historic feel. It has large windows, columns and a classical architectural style. The ground in front of it is covered in autumn leaves, and the sky in the background is blue.
A park-like setting with tall trees in autumn. Sunlight filters through the trees and leaves, most of which are already lying on the ground. On a small hill stands a stone monument topped with a cross.
A semi-circular memorial area with many plaques on a concrete wall; some ivy is growing at the base. In the centre stands a stepped, rectangular monument made of dark stones, covered in moss.

City Walk: Braunschweig Under National Socialism

in cooperation with the Schillstraße Memorial

The Free State of Braunschweig played a leading role in the early stages of National Socialism. After the state election in 1930, the Nazi Party became part of a coalition that replaced the Social Democratic government. This walk around the city will take participants to different places in the centre of Braunschweig and inform them about what happened in Braunschweig during the Nazi period. The main focus will be on early Stormtrooper marches and Nazi Party demonstrations of power, central Nazi organisations, the biographies of victims and remembrance culture in Braunschweig today. The walk brings history to life and invites participants to engage critically with the past.

The Schillstraße Memorial was opened in 2000 and is the main memorial site for crimes committed by the Nazis in Braunschweig. Dr Stina Barrenscheen-Loster is director of the memorial and managing director of the supporting association, Arbeitskreis Andere Geschichte e.V.
