“You have to be brave to make a public appearance, but that’s the only way to achieve the change that you want.” – Dalibor Šandor

Frightening, disturbing and fascinating at the same time – monsters captivate people every day in creepy horror films, series, and video games. Neither human nor animal, these fictional creatures have always been an expression of what was seen as the supposedly other in society and culture. But how exactly does this figure of horror emerge? What makes it so scary and “monstrous”? In this lecture performance, Dalibor Šandor examines representations of monsters in media and, based on the rehearsal process for his performance We are not Monsters (2019), critically considers society’s view of and treatment of disabled people. He was artistically supported in the development of Dis_Lecture on Something very special by Marcel Bugiel (aka Dr. Acula), Frosina Dimovska (aka Sylphina), and Saša Asentić (aka Dark Lord).

Dalibor Šandor is a performer and member of the group Per.Art, a community of artists that includes both disabled and non-disabled people. He is particularly interested in video games, fantasy and horror genres as well as self-advocacy and reflection on the social reality of disabled people.
