Mille et Une Nuits

Sorour Darabi

Paris

Wherein lies the fascination with the stories from the One Thousand and One Nights that has endured for centuries? In this contemporary opera, eight performers take Scheherazade’s perspective and reinterpret the idea of the night through music, dance, and performance. This literary classic also encapsulates the fear of an endless night and the fate of an inevitable end. Scheherazade postpones the hour of her own death by inventing new stories every night. Telling stories becomes a question of survival and resistance. Sorour Darabi orchestrates a choreographic book made up of several chapters that carries us into the depth of the voices and the expanse of the night.

Originally from Iran, Sorour Darabi has been living and working in Paris since 2013. As part of the underground organization ICCD, Sorour Darabi worked actively in Iran and performed at the festival Untimely organized by the ICCD in Tehran before leaving for France. During the studies at the CCN de Montpellier, Sorour Darabi created the solo Subject to Change, a performance that questions change in relation to time and coexistence with an environment. This was followed by the solo Farci.e, which dealt with the concepts of language, gender identity and sexuality.
